ETTY, WILLIAM, born in York, March 10, 1787, died there, Nov. 13. 184!). He was long unsuccessful, but by persevering drudgery at last won his reward; in 1811 his Telemaehus rescuing Antiope was hung in the Royal Academy, and in 1820 his Coral Finders, and in 1821 his CIcojKitrtl on the Cydnus, brought him fame. In 1822 he visited Italy and became an honorary mem- ber of the Venetian Academy ; and in 1824 he was elected an A.R.A., and in 1828 U.A. Etty delighted in painting the nude, espe- cially the female form, and as a colourist had few equals in the English school.
