TURPILIUS, Roman painter, of Venetia, 1st century A.D. He was a knight, and Pliny mentions him (xxxv. 7 [20] ) as an ex- ception to the low condition in life of the painters of his day. He painted with hia left hand. TURPIN DE CRISSti, LANCELOT THEODORE, Comte de, born in Paris in 1781, died there in 1859. Landscape and architecture painter, son of the Marquis de Turpin, who, forced by the Revolution to leave France, died in America, leaving his family without resources. Lancelot took up painting, and after studying in Rome re- turned to Paris, where he was patronized by Napoleon and Josephine and by Prince Eu- gene. He formed an art collection which he bequeathed to the Angers Museum.
