KAUFMANN, THEODOR, born at Uelzen,
Hanover, in 1814. Genre painter, pupil
in Munich of Kaulbach; took part in the
revolution at Dresden in 1848, went to
America in 1855, and fought on the side of
the Union in the Civil War. In 1871 he
published the "American Painting-Book."
