a wood-engraver he
went to Munich in
1861, and became a
pupil of the Royal
Bavarian Academy;
studied under his
father-in-law, the
Chevalier Ainmuller,
in 1862, and under
Piloty in 1869-76. Has lived and painted
many years in Munich. Exhibits in London,
Munich, and New York. Great medal,
Royal Bavarian Academy, 1876. Visited

NEALCES or NEOCLES, Greek painter,
of Sicyon, about 250 B.C. He ranks among
the best painters of the Neo-Sicyonic school.
Pliny mentions (xxxv. [138]) a Venus by
him, also a Battle on the Nile between the
Persians and the Egyptians. Plutarch relates
(Arat. 13) how he saved a picture by
Melanthius, about to be destroyed by Aratus,
by painting out the figure of Aristratus
