In 1666 Le Brun induced the king to found the French Academy at Rome, where, though absent, he was made prince of the Academy of St. Luke. After the death of Colbert the fortunes of Le Brun declined, through the enmity of Louvois, who brought so much trouble upon him that he sickened and died. He was an extremely able and prolific painter, who belonged to a theatrical and mannered school.
