Born Oct. 19th, 1796; is virtually by decision of the House of Lords (see memoir of his lordship's pre- decessor) 6th Earl of Berkeley. His lord- ship, however, has never taken his seat. Brother living, Gemge Charles Granttey Fitz- hardins;e, heir presumptive, b. 1800; was edu- cated privately, and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst ; sat as M.P. for West Glou- cestershire, 183251 ; served as Ensign and God with us. Lieut, in the Coldstream Guards 1816 23, since when he has been on half-pay ; is a Magistrate for Gloucestershire : m. 1824, Caroline Martha, who d. 1873, daughter of the late Paul Benfield, Esq., and has issue, Capt. Edward StrattonFitzhardinge, b. 1827. Residence, Alderney Manor, Poole. Club, Arthur's. Sisters living, Caroline Fitzhardinge, 6.1803, m. 1829, (Maxse). Emily Elizabeth b. 1807, m 1839, (Capel). Creations, Baron Berkeley, by writ, 1295, Earl of Berkeley and Viscount Dursley, 1679, in the peerage of England. arntg Gules : a chevron between ten crosses patee, argent, six in chief and four in base. (Crest, A mitre charged with the arms of Berkeley. Supporters, Two lious, argent, the sinister ducally crowned, plain collared, and line reflexed over the back, or. Residence, Cranford-house, Hounslow, Middlesex. BERKELEY, Earl of, His lordship's predecessor was his father, Frederick Augustus, 5th Earl of Berkeley. He was b. May 24, 1745, and succeeded his father, Jan. 1755 ; was Lord Lieut, of Gloucestershire, Constable of St. Briavel's Castle, Warden of Dean Forest, and High Steward of Gloucester: m. May 16, 1796, Miss Mary Cole, (which marriage, however, though the House of Lords decided that it took place in 1796, was said, by some members of the family, to have been celebrated in March, 1785) : d.
