JOHN PATRICK CRICHTON-STUART, K.T., 3rd Marquess, a Baronet, and Knight of the Papal orders of St. Gregory (Grand Cross) and of the Holy Sepulchre at Jerusalem. Born Sept. 12th, 1847 ; suc- ceeded his father in 1848 ; was educated at Harrow, and at Christ Church, Oxford ; is Hereditary Sheriff and Coroner of Bute- shire, Hereditary Keeper of Rothesay Castle, and a Dep. Lieut, of Ayrshire : married (1872) the Hon. Gwendolen Mary Anne Fitzalan- Howard, eldest daughter of the 1st Baron Howard of Glossop. Heir presumptive, His cousin, James Frederick Dudley Crichton-Stuart, M.P., Lord Lieut, and Sheriff Principal of Bute, son of Lord Patrick James Herbert, who was brother of the 2nd Marquess. B. 1824 ; was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge; entered the Grenadier Guards 1842; was appointed Capt. and Lieut. -Col. 1855, retired 1861 ; is a Magistrate for Ayrshire and Glamorganshire; has been M.P. for Cardiff (L.) since 1857: m. 1S64, Gertrude Frances, daughter of the Rt. BUTE, Marquess of, His lordship's predecessor was his father, John, K.T. F.R.S. 2nd Marquess of Bute, and 6th Earl of Dumfries. He was b. Aug. 13, 17Q3, and succeeded his grandfather, Nov. 16, 1814 ; had inherited the Earldom of Dumfries from his maternal grandfather in 1803, and assumed by sign manual the name and arms of Crichton, in addition to his own ; was Lord Lieut, and Custos Rotulorum of Glamorgan, shire, and Recorder of Banbury : m. 1st, July 28, 1818, Lady Maria North, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Guilford, (she d. 1841), without issue ; 2ndly, April 10, 1845, Lady Sophia Frederica Christina Hastings, daughter of the 1st Marquess of Hastings; and d.
