Born 1821 ; was educated at Eton, and at Bal- liol College, Oxford, tvhere he obtained a scholarship, and subsequently became a Fellow of Exeter College (B.A. 1842, ege M.A. 1846.) Called to the Bar at the Fear God, and honour the king. Middle Temple 1847, and made a Q.C. and Bencher of the Middle Temple 1861. Was Recorder of Portsmouth from 1855 till 1866, Solicitor-General from Dec. 1868 to Nov. 1871, and Attorney-General from Nov. 1871 till IS'ov. 1873, when he was appointed Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas. Author of various papers in the " Edinburgh Review" and other periodicals. Sat as M.P. for Exeter from 1865 till 1873, having in 1864 been an unsuccessful candidate. Married (Ib40) Jane Fortescue, 3rd daughter of the Rev. George Turner Seymour, of Farringford Hill, Isle of Wight, and has issue, living, Sons, Bernard John Seymour, b. 1853 ; educated at Eton, is at Trinity College, Oxford.
