Born Sept. 21st, 1812; educated at Winchester and at Oriel College, Oxford. Js a P.C. (1855), Lord Lieut, and Gustos Rotulorum of the co. and city of Limerick, and was High Sheriff thereof 1835 ; is also a Magistrate ___^^^^ for co. Clare, Col. of the Limerick Militia;, ^Advise with wit^~ and author of various pamphlets con- nected with Ireland and Education. Was Clerk to the Ordnance from Dec. 1853 till the abolition of the office Feb. 1857. President of the Board of Health from Feb. till Sept. 1857, Vice- President of the Board of Trade in 1866, Under Secretary of State for the Colonies from Dec. 1868 till Jan. 1871, and Postmaster-General, without a seat in the Cabinet, from Jan. 1871 till Nov. 1873. Is well known as the early advocate of "reproductive employment" during the Irish famine of 1846 7. Sat as M.P. for Limerick co. (L.) 1847 73. Married 1st (1836) Lady Anna Maria Charlotte who died 1855 only daughter of the 2nd Earl of Dunraven, and 2ndly (1857) Berthe, 3rd daughter of the Comte de Montigny, and has issue, living, Son, Gaston Thomas William, b. 1858.
