Crest, A boar's head, couped, or, motto over "Goojerat." BADGES, 1st, on a mural crown, argent, a lion passant guardant, or, holding in the dexter paw two flag staves, in bend sinister, proper, the one being the Union flag of Great Britain and Ireland, surmounting the other, the staff thereof broken with a triangular banner flowing therefrom, to represent a Chinese flag, having thereon a dragon, and in an escroll above, the word "China." On the sinister side 2nd, a dexter arm, embowed, in the facings of the 87th Regiment, being gules, faced vert, the hand grasping the colour of the said Regiment displayed, and a repre- sentation of a French eagle reversed and depressed, the staff broken, proper, in an escroll above the word "Barossa." Supporters!, Dexter, a lion reguardant, or, gorged with an Eastern crown, gules, the rim inscribed with the word " Punjab " in letters of gold, with chain reflexed over the back, also gold; sinister, a dragon, or, gorged with a mural crown, sable, inscribed with the word " China," and chained, gold. GOUGH, Viscount, His lordship's predecessor was his father, Hugh, K.P. G CB K G S I. P.C. D.C.L. 1st Viscount Gough. He was b. Nov. 3, 17*9, and was the son of George Gough, Esq. of Woodstown, .Limerick. This distinguished Field Marshal and General entered the Army as Ensign in the 78th Highlanders, (Lieut. 1793); distinguished himself in Spain, at Talavera, at Barossa, at Vittoria, at Nivelle, at Tarila, in command of the 87th Regiment. Was Commander-in- Chief of the expedition to China (1842), and was for his services created a Baronet. Commanded the forces in India during the Gwalior and both the Sikh wars, and by his final victory at Goojerat (1849) obtained the Punjaub for England. He was rewarded with two peerages and the freedom of the city of London the repeated thanks of Parliament, and a pension of ^2,000 for three lives. At the time of his death he was a Field Marshal in the Army, Colonel of the Royal Horse Guards (Blue), Colonel-in-Chief of the 6oth Rifles, and Hon. Col- of the Irish Rifle Volunteers. In 1807, he m. Frances Maria, daughter of General Edward Stephens (she d. 1863) ; and d. March 2, 1869, having had issue two sons and four daughters. Gough-Calthorpe, family name of Baron Calthorpe.
