Born June 25th, 1802. Educated at University College, Oxford, (B.A. in honors 1823, M.A. 1826), of which he was sometime a Fellow. Was a Clerk in the Council Office 1823 4, when he was appointed to the Foreign Office. Was attached to Sir Stratford Cannings special missions to Turkey 1831, and to Spain 1832. Became Permanent Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1854, which office he resigned 1873. Accompanied Lord John Russell on his special mission to Vienna Feb. 1855. Sworn a Privy Councillor 1866. Married (1846) Mary Frances, daughter of the late Lord Robert Kerr, and has issue, living, Daughters Mary Georgina, b. 1848. Margaret Elizabeth, b. 1851. Was Secretary of State for the Colonies 1852, a Member of the Com- mittee of Council for Public Education 18589, First Lord of the Admiralty 18589 and 18667, Secretary of State for War 18678, Lieut.-Col. of the Worcestershire Yeomanry 18 to 1866, and Chairman of the Worcestershire Faithful and bold.
