M.P. heir presumptive, b. 1822; was edu- cated at Eton, and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst ; entered the 43rd Foot as Ensign, 1840, became Capt. 1840, Major, 1853, Col. 1855, Lieut.-Col, 82nd Foot, 1858, Major- Gen. 1868, and Lieut.-G.n. 1875; served in the Kaffir War, 18513, in the expedition to the Orange River sovereignty, at the battle of Berea, in the Crimea, including the battles of the Alma and Inkermann, and the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and in the Indian Mutiny .
