March 6, 1815, Catherine, natural daughter of the 1st Baron Thurlow, (she d. 1826; ; and d. Aug. 18, 1853, without issue. SANDHURST, BARON. (MANSFIELD.) WILLIAM ROSE MANSFIELD, P.O., G.C.S.I. G.C.B., D.C.L., 1st Baron, 5th son of the late John Mansfield, Esq. of Diggeswell- House, Hertfordshire, and grandson of the late Sir James Mansfield, sometime Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. Born 1819. Educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Entered the 53rd Foot as Ensign 1835, became Lieut. 1838, Capt. 1843, Major 1847, Lieut.-Col. 1851, Col. 1854, Major-Gen. 1858, Lieut.-Gen. 1864, and Gen. 1872. Distinguished himself in the Sutlej campaign 1845 6, being present at Buddiwal and Aliwal, and at Sobraon was Aide-de-Camp to Viscount Gough ; for these services he has medal and clasps. Commanded the 53rd Foot in the Punjab 1848 9, and was present at Goojerat, for which he has medal and clasps. Was employed in the Peshawur Frontier operations 1851 2, being present at Nawabund, Praughur and Skarkote. Appointed Responsible Military Adviser to the English Ambassador at Constantinople with the rank of Brigadier-Gen. 1855, and accompanied Lord Stratford de Redcliffe to the Crimea, August 1855. At the peace was appointed Consul- Gen, at Warsaw with the same military rank in Poland. Nominated Chief of the Staff in India at the outbreak of the Mutiny, with the local rank of Major-Gen, and served throughout the whole of the war of 1857 9, including the battle of Cawnpore, where he was wounded, the operations in the Doab, the siege of Lucknow, and various actions in the campaign of Rohilcund and Oudh. Received the thanks of Parliament 1859. Was Commander-in-Chief of the Bombay Army 1860 5, and General and Commander-in-Chief in India 1865 70. Has been Col. of the 38th Foot since 1862,; was Commander of the Forces in Ireland 1870 75. Made a Hon. D.C.L. of Oxford 1870. Created a K.C.B. 1858, a G.C.S.I. 1866, and a G.C.B. 1870. Married (1854) Margaret, youngest daughter of Robert Fellowes, Esq. of Shotesham-park, Norfolk, and has issue, living, Sons, William, b. 1855, appointed Sub-Lieut. Coldstream Guards 18/3.
