Born Feb. 1st, 1787; succeeded his father in 1804; entered the Army 1804, and served under the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsula ; was wounded at Busaco, and acted as Quartermaster-Gen. atVittoria; became Col. 1825, Major.-Gen. 1837, Lieut.-Gen. 1846, Gen. 1854, and Field Marshal 1875 ; was Governor of Madras 1842 8, Col. of the 30th Foot 184652, and Col. of the 42nd Foot 18623, since when he has been Col. of the 2nd Life Guards ; is a Lieut.-Gen. in the Royal Archers (the Queen's Body Guard) of Scotland, and Hereditary Chamberlain of Dumfriesshire : married (1816) Lady Susan Montagu, 3rd daughter of the 5th Duke of Manchester, (this lady died, 1870), and has issue, living, Sons, Arthur, Viscount Walden, F.R.S., b. 1824; entered the Grenadier Guards, 1841, be- came Lieut, and Capt. 1846, Capt. and Lieut.-Col. 1854, Col. I860, and Lieut.-Col. 1/th Lancers, 1866, in which year he retired from the Army; served in the Sutlej Campaign, as Aide-de-Camp to Lord Hardinge, 1845 6, and was present at the battle of Sobraon, for which he has a medal; served also in the Crimea, 18546, for which he has the Crimean medal and clasp, the Sardinian medal of valour, the order of the Medjidie, and the Turkish War medal ; is President of the Royal Zoological Society, a Fellow of the Royal Society, and a Dep.
