Born 1807 ; was edu- cated at Christ Church, Oxford, (B.A. 1st class in Classics and in Mathematics, 1829, M.A. 1832, D.D. 1861); was appointed Rector of All Souls', Marylebone, 1847, and of Limpsfield, Surrey, 1856, Chaplain to the Queen, 1850. Consecrated 29th Bishop of Gloucester, and 45th Bishop of Bristol, 1856, and translated to Durham, (80th Bishop), 1861 ; is Patron of 51 Livings, and alternately with the Crown, 17, the Archdeaconries of Durham, Northumberland, and Lin- disfarne, and some of the Canonries in his Cathedral: married (1830) Mary Ursula, only daughter of Charles Sealy, Esq.; and 2ndly (1846), Caroline, daughter of Thomas Read Kemp, Esq. of Lewes, Sussex, and has issue, living, Sons, Thomas Charles> b. 1831, m. 1859, Susan Carter, daughter of Robert Bowne Min- turn, Esq. Francis Henry, b. 1848. Daughters, Frances Dorothy. Caroline Emily. This See was first established at Holy Island in 635 ; but on the invasion of the Danes, it was removed to Chester-le- Street, where it continued for 200 years, when it was finally fixed at Durham. Born 1820; educated at Merchant Taylor's School, and at Pembroke College, Cambridge, (B.A. Senior Optime, and 2nd class Classical Tripos, 1842, M.A. 1845, and D.D. 1869) ; was successively Perpetual Curate of St. Saviour's, Coal Pit Heath, and of St. Marks, Easton, near Bristol ; Vicar of Kempsford, Gloucestershire, 185568; Vicar of Leeds, 1868 73 ; Hon. Canon of Christchurch, 186773 ; Select Preacher before the University of Cambridge, 1864, 1867, and 1872 ; and Ramsden Preacher before the University, 1870 ; and a Chaplain to Her M;ijest,y, 1872 3. Was also sometime Professor of Theology at Cuddesdon, Examining Chaplain to the Bishop of Winchester (Wilberforce), Proctor for the Clergy of the Diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, in Convocation of Canterbury, and a Proctor for the Clergy of the Diocese of Ripon, in Convocation of York. Consecrated 58th Bishop of Ely, 1873. Is Patron of 46 Livings, four Canonries, and the Archdeaconries of Ely, Bedford, Huntingdon, and Sudbury; and Visitor of the Colleges of St. John's, Jesus and St. Peter's, at Cambridge.
