Born 1817; was edii- acted at St. John's College, Cambridge (Bell's University Scholar, Senior Optime, 1st class in the Classical Tripos, B.A. 1840, M.A. 1843) ; or- dained a Deacon in 1842, by the Bishop of Ely, (licensed to the Curacy of Warsop, Notts), and a Prifst in the following year by the Bishop of Lincoln; was Vicar of Madingley, 1847 52; has been a Fellow and College Tutor of St. John's College, Cambridge. On the promotion of Dr. Hook to the Deanery of Chichester, in 1859, he was presented to the Vicarage of Leeds, and was appointed a Canon of Ripon Cathedral, in 1861 ; a Rural Dean of that diocese. Consecrated 95th Bishop of Hereford, 1868; is Patron of 36 Livings, the Can. Res. the two Archdeaconries of Hereford and Salop, the Precentorship, Chancellorship, Treasurership, and Prebends of his Cathedral: married (1859) Frances Turner, youngest daughter of Major William Martin, of the Bengal Army, and has issue, living, Sons, James Beresford, b. i860. Canon Selwyn, Margaret Professor of Divinity at Cambridge. Born 1809 ; educated at Eton, and at St. John's College, Cambridge, (B.A. 1st class in Classics, 1831, M.A. 1834, D.D. 1841), and was Fellow of his Col- lege ; was Private Tutor at Eton, 1831 41, and Curate of Windsor from 1839 41. Consecrated 1st Bishop of New Zealand, 1841, translated to Lichfield (90th Bishop) 1807 ; is Patron of 86 Livings, and, alternately with the Crown, 23, the Canonries and Prebends in his Cathedral, and the Archdeaconries of Stafford, Derby, and Salop: married (1839) Sarah, daughter of Sir John Richardson, and has issue, living, Sons, The Rev. William, 6. 1840 5 was educated at Eton, and St. John's College, Cam- bridge, (B.A. 1862, M.A. 1865); is Vicar of Bromfleld, Shropshire: m. 1864, Harriet Susan, daughter of the Rev. Ambrose Stewart. The Rev. John Richardson, b. 1844 ; was educated at Eton, and Trinity College, Cambridge, (B.A. 1866, M.A. 1870) ; late Vicar of St. George's, Wolverhampton ; m. 1872. Clara Long, daughter of Capt Joseph George Long Innes, 6gth Regiment. This See was founded by Oswy, king of Mercia, 6s6 ; in 1075, it was removed to Chester; in 1102, to Coventry ; and finally to its original foundation at Lichfleld.
