AIRLIE, Earl of, His lordship's predecessor was his father, David, 9th Earl of Airlie. He was A.Dec. 16, 1785 ; set up his claim to the family honours, which had been under attainder since 1716, and was declared, in 1826, by the House of Peers, to be by right 9th Earl. He was a Representative Peer of Scotland, and Lord Lieut, of Forfarshire. He m. 1st, Oct. 7, 1812, Clementina, daughter of Gavin Drummond, Esq. (she d. 1835), having had issue two sons and five daughters -, 2ndly, Nov. 15, 1838, Margaret, daughter of W. Bruce, Esq. of Cowden, (she d. 1845): and d. Lord Frederick Kitz-clarence, Commander-in-Chief at Madras; sat as M.P. for Norwich 1857 9, and for Wick 18605; and for Berwick (L.) 186874; unsuccessfully contested Stroud 1875; was Private Secretary to Lord John Russell, (Earl Russell, K.G.) 1850, Treasurer of the Household (June) 1859, and Civil Secretary in Canada 185966; created a Privy Councillor I860, and a K.C.M.G. 1870: m. 1855, Sophia, daughter of Sir Allan Macnab, Bart, formerly Prime Minister of Canada, and has, with other issue, Arnold Allan Cecil, b. 1858.
