This family derives its origin from Ogerus de Pugeys, a Norman, who came to England with the Conqueror, and was awarded the manor of Bedingfeld. During the civil wars Sir Henry Bedingfeld, Knt. , besides being imprisoned in the Tower, lost ^47,000 in the King's cause. His son claimed this amount of Charles II., but that monarch, being unable to pay the money, created him a baronet.
