It is supposed that one of this family, who came over to Scotland with the embassy from Charle- magne in 807, was created the ist Thane of Man. Sir Simon Fraser, temp. Alexander III., received by charter the lordship of Loveth, and he and his brother (Sir Francis), his cousin (Sir Richard Fraser), and William Fraser, Archbishop of St. Andrew's and Lord Chancellor of Scotland, were appointed auditors in the competition for the Scottish crown between Bruce and Baliol, in 1291. From the 2nd son of Hugh Fraser, created Baron Lovat by James I. of Scotland, the present baronet is. descended in a direct male line.
