Sir William, Governor of Fort William, led the descent on the west coast of Scotland at the time that the Duke of Monmouth landed in the south of England. Sir Alexander, the 2nd baronet, celebrated in Scottish history, escaped to Holland after the battle of Bothwell Bridge, but was afterwards captured ; during his absence he was found guilty, and sentenced to death and forfeiture of estates. On his capture it was decreed that the sentence should be put in force, but, after six years' imprisonment, he was released in 1689. GORDON, Creation 1818, of Northcourt, Isle of Wight.
