This is a younger branch of the Montgomerys, Earls of Eglinton, descended from Robert, second son of the ist Lord Montgomery. The ist baronet, Sir James Montgomery, M.P. for Peebles 1768-76, was Chief Baron of the Exchequer in Scotland 1775-81. His elder brother, William, was also created a baronet, but his title became extinct 1831.
