HUTCHINS, SIR PHILIP PERCIVAL (1838–)

Born Jan. 28, 1838 : son of William Hutchins : educated at Merchant Taylors' and Haileybury : entered the Madras Civil Service, 1857 : called to the bar from the Inner Temple, 1875 : held several judicial appointments, and was Judge of the High Court, Madras, 1883–6 : Member of Council, Madras, 1886–8 : Member of the Supreme Council, 1888–93 : Judicial Secretary, at the India OfiSice, 1893 : Member of the Council of India, 1898 : C.S.I., 1888 : K.C.S.L, 1891.

HUTCHINSON, HENRY DOVETON (1847–)

Born Sep. 13, 1847 : son of T. Cayley Hutchinson, M.D. : joined the Indian Army : served in the Sikhim campaign, 1887–8 : rehef of Chitral, 1895 : Tirah campaign, 1897–8 : commanded troops in Chitral after the British occupation : Director of Military Education in India, 1896–1901 : Assistant Military Secretary for Indian affairs, 1902 : author of Military Sketching made Easy, Field Fortifications, The Story of Waterloo, The Story of 1812, The Story of Corunna, The Campaign in Tirah : C.S.I, 1902.

HUTHWAITE, SIR EDWARD (1794–1873)

Born 1794 : son of William Huthwaite, a draper, Alderman and Mayor : educated at the R.M.A., Woolwich : joined the E. I. Co.'s Bengal Artillery, 1810 : became Lt-General, 1868 : was in the Nipal war, 1815–16 : in Oudh, 1817 : in the Mahratta war, 1817–18 : in Cachar in 1824, to repel the Burmese invasion : at the capture of Bhartpur, 1825–6 : Brig-Major of Artillery, 1834 : held various important artillery commands : in the first Sikh war of 1845–6, at Firozshahr and Sobraon : C.B. : in the Panjab campaign, 1848–9 : at the Chenab, Chilianwala, and Gujarat, the surrender of the Sikhs, and pursuit of the Afghans to the Khyber : commanded a Brigade at Ludiana, and at Meerut : retired, 1854 : in 1860 transferred to the Royal Artillery : K.C.B. in 1869 : died at Naini Tal, April 4, 1873.

HUTT, SIR GEORGE (1809–1889)
