Frontier, 1897–8 : West Africa, 1901 : commanded KanoSakoto expedition, 1903 : C.B.: D.S.O., 1902 : Brig-General, West African Field Force.

KENNAWAY, SIR JOHN, BARONET (1758–1836)

Political : son of William Kennaway : born March 6, 1858 : educated at Exeter Grammar School : entered the E. I. Co.'s military service in 1772 : wrecked at the mouth of the Ganges : in 1781 he was Persian Secretary to Col. T. D. Pearse, commanding the force sent from Bengal to the Carnatic : Captain in 1781 : served under Sir Eyre Coote against Hyder in the Carnatic : in subsequent campaigns up to 1786 : then became A.D.C to Lord Cornwallis, who sent him in 1788 to insist on the cession of the Guntur Sircar, as agreed upon, and to make a treaty of July, 1790, with the Nizam : Baronet, in 1791 : he also made the treaty of Seringapatam, of March 1792, with Tippoo : he was the first Resident at Hyderabad from April 28, 1788 : retired to England in 1794 : died Jan. 1, 1836.

KENNEDY, JAMES (1842– )

I.C.S. : born 1842 : son of Rev. J. Kennedy, M.A., missionary in Benares and Kumaon, and minister of Portobello, Scotland : educated at Edinburgh High School and University : went out to India, 1863 : retired, 1890 : Magistrate and Collector of several districts in the United Provinces : Honorary Treasurer of the Royal Asiatic Society and Member of the Bishop of London's Diocesan Conference : has written, "Early Commerce of Babylon and India," "Buddhist Gnosticism," "The System of Basilides" and other articles in the J.R.A.S : the "Mediaeval History of India," in the Imperial Gazetteer : History of the N.W.P. in the British Empire series (India), "Anglo-Indian Novelists and Hinduism," the "Tendencies of Hinduism," and other articles on Indian Religions and Indian Education in The East and the West, the Asiatic Quarterly Review, etc. : lectures on India at University College, London.

KENNEDY, JOHN PITT (1796–1879)

Son of John Pitt Kennedy : born May 8, 1796 : educated at Foyle College, Londonderry, and the R.M.A., Woolwich, entering the R.E. in 1815 : became Secretary and Director of Public Works in Cephalonia, 1822–8, under Sir Charles Napier : devoted himself to Irish agriculture and education : Secretary to the Devon Commission and the Famine Relief Committee : was Military Secretary to Sir Charles Napier when C. in C. in India, 1849–50 : at the forcing of the Kohat Pass, 1850 : made the Kennedy Road from Simla towards Tibet : Consulting Engineer to Government for Railways : retired in 1852 : Lt-Colonel : managing Director of the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway, surveying the line, 1853–4 : died June 28, 1879 : wrote extensively on Irish and Indian subjects.

KENNEDY, SIR MICHAEL KAVANAGH (1824–1898)

General : born April 28, 1824 : son of G. M. Kennedy : educated at Addis- combe : entered the E. I. Co.'s service in the Engineers in Bombay, 1841 : Lt-Colonel, 1861 : Secretary to the Government of Bombay in the P.W.D., 1863 : K. C.S.I, for services during the famine, 1876–8, in Bombay and Madras : Durector-General of transport during the Afghan war of 1879–80 : in the operations round Kabul in Dec. 1879 : retired at end of 1880 after the campaign : Colonel Commandant R.E., 1891 : died Feb. 1, 1898.
