LOGAN, JAMES RICHARDSON ( ? –1869)
Educated for the law : went (1830–40) to Penang in the Straits Settlements, where he acquired a leading position, and worked for the good of the settlement : wrote scientific papers for the Asiatic Society of Bengal's journal, on the Geology of Singapore, and edited the Journal of the Indian Archipelago and Eastern Asia, 1847, dealing with the languages and ethnology of the Indian Archipelago : he also initiated and edited the Penang Gazette : was Notary Public of the Supreme Court, and member of learned Societies of England : died at Penang, Oct. 20, 1869.
LOGIN, SIR JOHN SPENCER (1809–1863)
Educated at the University of Edinburgh : became an Assistant Sturgeon in the E. I. Co.'s service, 1832 : was appointed to the Bengal Horse Artillery : served with the Nizam's Army : in 1836, on Sir C. Metcalfe's Staff, when Lieutenant-Governor of the N.W.P. : in the Afghan war, in medical charge of the Horse Artillery, and of the British Mission to Herat, also in a political capacity : on the C. in C.'s staff, 1840 : Surgeon to the British Residency at Lucknow, and Superintendent of Hospitals to the King of Oudh : in the Panjab campaign, 1848–9 : on the annexation of the Panjab became Guardian and Superintendent of the Maharaja Dulip Singh : knighted, 1854 : retired, 1858 : died Oct. 18, 1863.
LONG, REV. JAMES (1814–1887)
Born in 1814 : passed some time in Russia : ordained in 1839 : went to India in 1846 as a Missionary of the Church Missionary Society : stationed near Calcutta : in 1861 he wrote a preface to, and superintended the translation of, the Nil Darpan, a Bengali play, directed against the indigo planters. "Padre" Long, as he was called, was indicted for libel, and sentenced to Rs. 1,000 fine and a month's imprisonment. He wrote a number of works, chiefly connected with Bengal, its people, language and literature, Calcutta and its history, but also on wider questions of Indian politics. He was F.R.G.S. and member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal : returned to England in 1872 : wrote Eastern Proverbs and Emblems, illustrating Old Truths, for Trubner's Oriental series : died March 23, 1887.
LONGDEN, SIR HENRY ERRINGTON (1819–1890)
General : born Jan. 1829 : son of Thomas Hayter Longden : educated at Eton and Sandhurst : joined the 1oth regt. in 1836 : was in the Sikh wars of 1845–6 and 1848–9, at Sobraon, the sieges of Multan, Cheniote, Gujarat. In the mutiny of 1857, he was under Sir Colin Campbell, and engaged in the Azimghar and Jaunpur districts, in the advance on Lucknow, its siege and capture, at the reliefs of Azimghar in 1858, and in the Jagdishpur jungles : Adjutant-General in India, 1866–9 : K.C.B. and C.S.I. : died Jan. 29, 1890.
