LUDLOW, JOHN MALCOLM (1821–)

Bom at Nimach, March 8, 1821 : son of Colonel John Ludlow, C.B., H.E.I. C.S. : educated at College Bourbon, Paris : called to the bar from Lincoln's Inn, 1843, and practised as Conveyancer till 1874 : Secretary to the Royal Commission on Friendly and Benefit Societies, 1870–4 : Registrar of Friendly Societies in England, 1874 : Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies, 1874–91 : C.B., 1887 : author of several books, including British India, its Races and its History, 1858; The War in Oudh, 1858; Thoughts on the Policy of the Crown towards India, 1859 : has contributed to various Journals and Magazines : Member of the "British India Society" and of the "India Reform Society," and on the Council of the original "Imperial Federation League."

LUGARD, SIR EDWARD (1810–1898)

Born 1810 : son of Capt. LUMLEY, SIR JAMES R. ( ? –1846)

Maj-General : joined the Army, 1796 : commanded his regt. at Bhartpur, 1805 : was present at the capture of the Isle of France : in the Nipal war, 1814–6 : in the Pindari war, 1817–8 : at Maharajpur and GwaHor, 1843 : Colonel of the 9th N.I. : Adjutant-General of the Army, 1833–46 : K.C.B. : was 50 years in India : died at Firozpur, March 2, 1846.

LUMSDEN, SIR HARRY BURNETT (1821–1896)

Born Nov. 12, 1821 : son of Colonel Thomas Lumsden, C.B., of the Bengal Artillery : educated at Aberdeen and Bromley : joined the 59th Bengal N.I. in 1838 : with the 33rd N.I. in the forcing of the Khyber, 1842 : in the Satlaj campaign of 1845–6, wounded at Sobraon : Assistant to Sir H. M. Lawrence at Lahore in 1846 : with a force through the Hazara country : formed the corps of Guides, horse and foot, and originated the khaki uniform for the Indian Army : with the Guides at Multan, 1848–9 : at Gujarat : in affairs with the frontier tribes : in 1857–8 sent on a mission to Kandahar with (Sir) P. S. Lumsden and Dr. H. W. Bellew, to ensure the proper application of the subsidy to the Amir : C.B. in 1859 : in the Waziri expedition, 1860 : attacked by a fanatic : commanded the Hyderabad Contingent, 1862–9 : Maj-General, 1868 : left India in 1869 : K.C.S.I., 1873 : Lt-General, 1875 : died Aug. 12, 1896.

LUMSDEN, MATTHEW (1777–1835)

Son of John Lumsden : born 1777 : educated at King's College, Old Aberdeen : to India in 1794 in the E. I. Co.'s employ : studied Persian and Arabic : appointed in 1803 Assistant Professor of Arabic and Persian at the College of Fort William : Professor in 1808 : Secretary to the Calcutta Madrasa in 1812 : in charge of the Company's Press at Calcutta, 1814–7 : Secretary to the Stationery Committee, 1818 : made a journey through Persia, Georgia and Russia to England, 1820 : again in India, as Professor, 1822–5 : retired, 1826 : died in England, March 31, 1835 : wrote Persian and Arabic grammars, and edited the Shahnama : LL.D. of Old Aberdeen.
