SPEECHLY, RIGHT REV. JOHN MARTINDALE (1836–1898)

Son of Thomas Kelfall Speechly : educated at St. John's College, Cambridge : ordained, 1860 : devoted himself to foreign Mission work, 1862 : was made Bishop of Travancore and Cochin, 1879 : resigned, 1889 : Vicar of Hernhill, Faversham, 1892 : died Jan. 20, 1898.

SPEKE, PETER (1745–1811)

Of the Civil Service, on the Bengal Establishment : Member, from Sep. 17, 1789, to Oct. 2, 1801, of the Supreme Council, where his was "long a ruling voice." At the time of his death, on Nov. 30, 1811, he was acting President of the Board of Trade, and President of the Marine Board : buried in Calcutta.

SPENCER, HON. SIR AUGUSTUS ALMERIC (1807–1893)

Third son of first Lord Churchill : born March 25, 1807 : educated privately : entered the Army, 1825 : served in Portugal, Canada : throughout the Crimea, in all the battles : commanding the 44th regt., and as Brigadier : Maj-General : commanded the Bangalore Division, 1860 : C. in C. Bombay, Aug. 1869, to Oct. 1874 : General : died Aug. 28, 1893 : G.C.B.

SPENCER, RIGHT REV. GEORGE TREVOR (1799–1866)

Son of William Robert Spencer, and great-grandson of the third Duke of Marlborough : educated at Charterhouse and University College, Oxford : incumbent of Buxton, 1824–9 : rector of Leaden Roding, Essex, 1829–37 : Bishop of Madras, 1837–49 : D.D., 1837 : Coadjutor Bishop in the Diocese of Bath and Wells : Chancellor of St. Paul's : rector, 1861, of Walton in the Wolds : died July 16, 1866.

SPENCER, LIONEL DIXON (1842–

Born June 16, 1842 : son of William Spencer : educated at Newcastle and St. Andrew's University : M.D. : entered Indian Medical Service, 1865, and retired, 1902 : served in Waziristan expedition, 1894–5, as P.M.O. : C.B., 1895 : Principal Medical Officer, Panjab command : Surgeon-General.

SPRENGER, ALOYS (1813–1893)

Son of Christopher Sprenger : born in the Tyrol, Sep. 3, 1813 : educated at Innsbruck, Vienna, Paris : studied Medicine and Oriental languages : naturalized in England, 1838 : M.D. at Leyden University, 1841 : went to India in the E. I. Co.'s Medical Service, 1843: Principal of the Muhammadan College at Delhi, 1844 : Assistant Resident at Lucknow, 1847–50 : Principal of the Calcutta Madrasa, of the Muhammadan College at Hughli, and Persian Translator to Government, 1851–4 : Secretary to the Asiatic Society of Bengal, 1851–4 : retired, 1857 : Professor of Oriental Languages at Berne : settled at Heidelberg : died there, Dec. 19, 1893 : wrote an English-Hindustani grammar, Selections from Arabic Authors, The History of Mahmud of Ghazni, an edition of the Gulistan, the Life of Muhammad from original sources : on Old Arabian Geography : compiled a Catalogue of the MSS. in the library of the King of Oudh : knew 25 languages and Oriental literature thoroughly : printed in Hindustani, at Delhi, the first vernacular paper printed in India, a weekly Periodical.

SPRY, HENRY HARPER (1804–1842)

Of the Bengal Medical Staff : travelled greatly in India : wrote Modern India : Secretary to the Agri-Horticultural Society of India, whose Journal he established : F.R.S. : M.R.A.S : Member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal : Member of the Statistical Society of London : died in Calcutta, Sep. 4, 1842.

SPURGIN, SIR JOHN BLICK (1821–1903)

Lt-General : entered the Army in 1842 : served with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers till 1872 : Colonel of that regt. in 1895 : served with distinction through the mutiny : Brig-Major to General Neill at Cawnpur, and at the entry and defence of Lucknow : assisted Sir D. Russell at the capture of the Kaisarbagh and the final siege of Lucknow. His later service was in Ireland and England. He was made C.S.I, in 1869 : C.B. in 1871 : K.C.B. in 1893. He died in London, Nov. 27, 1903.
