Cadet on the Bengal Establishment, 1772 : served against the Mahrattas, 1773, and 1780–2, against the Rohillas, 1774 : at Cutra : in the Carnatic, 1782 : at Cuddalore, 1783 : against Tippoo, 1790 : at Bangalore, Seringapatam and Savandrug, 1791 : under Cornwallis at Seringapatam, 1792 : Major in 1798 : suggested the formation of battalions of 2,000 marine sepoys : joined Lord Lake's Army against the Mahrattas, 1803 : greatly contributed to the capture of Agra, Oct. 18 : wounded at Laswari, Nov. I : at the capture of Gwalior, Feb. 4, 1804 : Maj-General, 1813 : K.C.B., 1815 : died Nov. 7, 1822.

WHITE, SIR HERBERT THIRKELL (1855– )

I.C.S. : son of Richard White : educated at Dulwich and Brasenose College, Oxford : Scholar : went out to Burma in the Civil Service, 1877 : Chief Judge of Chief Court, Lower Burma : Commissioner, Burma-China Boundary Commission, 1897–8 : K.C.I.E., 1903 : Lieutenant-Governor of Burma, 1905.

WHITE, SIR MICHAEL (1791–1868)

Son of Major Robert White : educated at Westminster : entered the 24th Light Dragoons, 1804 : in the field, on the Satlaj, 1809 : at the capture of Hatras, 1817 : in the Mahratta campaign, 1817–8 : at Bhartpur, 1826 : commanded Cavalry in Afghanistan : in the Khyber, to the occupation of Kabul : in the Satlaj campaign, 1845–6 : in Cavalry commands at the battles : as also in the battles of the Panjab campaign : C.B., 1843: K.C.B., 1862 : died Jan. 29, 1868 : Lt-General.

WHITEHEAD, RIGHT REV. HENRY (1853–)

Educated at Trinity College, Oxford, of which he became a Fellow : Principal of Bishop's College, and Superior of the Oxford Mission, Calcutta : Bishop of Madras since 1899.

WHITEHILL, THOMAS ( ? - ? )

Governor of Madras, 1777–8, and again in 1780 at the time of Hyder All's invasion of the Carnatic : removed by Warren Hastings from his post, according to one account, for refusing to restore the Guntur Sircar to Basalat Jung, brother to the Nizam, and according to another account, for his connexion with the Nuzveed zatnindari scandal which led, in 1783, to the introduction against him in Parliament of a Bill of pains and penalties.

WHITLEY, RIGHT REV. JABEZ CORNELIUS (1837–1904)

Born in 1837 : son of the Rev. E. Whitley : educated at the Mercers' School, Holborn, and Queen's College, Cambridge : ordained in 1860 : went to India in 1862 as a Missionary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel : worked at Delhi, 1862–9 : at Ranchi in Chota Nagpur with a colony of Native Christians of the Church of England, 1869–90 : consecrated, in 1890, Bishop of Chota Nagpur, his district remaining part of the Calcutta diocese, the new Bishop promising canonical obedience to the Metropolitan of Calcutta : he wrote a Primer of the Mundari Language, on Hindu Catechisms, and on the works of St. Ignatius : died at Darjeeling, Oct. 18, 1904.

WHITLOCK, SIR GEORGE CORNISH (1798–1868)

Born Dec. 3, 1798 : son of George Whitlock : entered the E. I. Co,'s service in Madras, 1818 : in the Mahratta campaign, 1819 : the Burmese war, 1826 : in the Coorg campaign, 1834 : Brig-General in command of the Kurnool movable column, 1857, which became the Sagar Field Force : in April, 1858, captured the fort and palace of Banda, and Kirwi in June : gained a victory at Kirwi, Dec. 1858 : K.C.B., 1859 : Colonel of the 1o8th regt., 1862 : commanded the N. Division of the Madras Army, 1860–3 : retired, 1863 : Lt-General, 1864 : died Jan. 30, 1868.
