Africa, 1903 : Political Agent at Haraoti and Tonk, 1898 : Resident at Indore : British Commissioner to Tibet, 1903–4 : negotiated a treaty at Lhasa, Sep. 1904 : C.I.E. : K.C.I.E.

YOUNGHUSBAND, JOHN WILLIAM (1823–)

Born Jan. 1823 : son of Maj-General Charles Younghusband, R.A. : entered Bombay Army, 1840, and became Maj-General, 1878 : served in Afghan campaign, 1812 : Sind campaign, 1843 : at the battle of Hyderabad, Sind : in the Beluch Hills campaign, 1845 ,against the Mandranis, 1847 : in several expeditions on the Panjab Frontier, 1851–7 : Indian mutiny, 1857 : Inspr-General of Police, Berar and Panjab : C.S.I., 1866.

YOUNGHUSBAND, ROBERT ROMER (1819–)

Entered the Army, 1837, and became General, 1877 : served in Sind and Beluchistan, 1840–2 : Brig-Major at Miani and Hyderabad : Brig-Major, Hyderabad, 1843–8, and of Rajputana Field Force, 1852–4 : A.A.G., Sind, 1854–6 : D.A.G., Persian expedition, 1856–7 : at Reshire, Bushire, Barazjan, Khushab : C.B. : Brig-General at Nasirabad, 1862–6.

YULE, SIR GEORGE UDNY (1813–1886)

LC.S. : brother of Sir Henry Yule (q.v.) : born 1813 : educated at Haileybury, 1829–31 : went to Lower Bengal, 1832, gaining a "reputation as a mighty hunter, alike with hog-spear and double barrel." After the Sonthal rebellion of 1855. he was specially selected to be Commissioner of Bhagalpur, to pacify the country. In the mutiny, 1857, he maintained order until July : when the mutineers threatened his Division, he raised volunteers and took most active measures, defeating and driving the rebels across the Nipal frontier and averting the danger by his personal energy and promptness. He officiated as Chief Commissioner of Oudh, 1861–3 : was Resident at Hyderabad, 1863–7 : Member of the Supreme Council from May, 1867, until he retired in Jan. 1868 : he proposed a private expedition to rescue the Abyssinian captives from King Theodore : and helped greatly to establish the celebration of "Primrose Day" : K.C.S.I. in 1866 : was also C.B. : died Jan. 13, 1886.

YULE, SIR HENRY (1820–1889)

Colonel : son of Major William Yule of the E. I. Co.'s service : born May I, 1820 : educated at the High School, Edinburgh ; Addiscombe and Chatham : joined the Bengal Engineers, 1840 : served in the Khasia hills in Assam, and on the W. Jamna canals : in both the Sikh wars : was at Chilianwala : on the Ganges canal : wrote on Fortification : was Deputy Consulting Engineer for Railways : and Under Secretary P.W.D. : Secretary to Colonel Arthur Phayre's mission to Ava in 1855 : wrote his Narrative of the Mission to the Court of Ava, 1858 : in the mutiny he was at Allahabad : later, resumed work in the Secretariat of the Government of India as Secretary P.W.D : retired in 1862 : C.B. in 1863 : published Mirabilia descripta of Friar Jordanus, 1863; Cathay and the Way Thither, 1866; the Book of Ser Marco Polo, 1871, 1875 : gained the medals of the Royal Geographical Society : and of the Geographical Society of Italy : edited Capt. Wood's Journey to the Source of the Oxus, 1873 : brought out, with Dr. A. C. Burnell (q.v.) the Glossary of Anglo-Indian-Words, or Hobson-Jobson, 1886 : and in 1887 the Diary of Sir William Hedges : wrote many papers and articles in the Asiatic Journals, and on geography, and in the Encyclopcedia Britannica : greatly advanced the knowledge of, and the public interest in, the mediaeval history and geography of Central Asia : Member of the Council of India, 1875–89 : LL.D.
