The lineage of this family commences with John Hamilton, bro. of 1st Earl of Arran, whose great-grandson received the peerage for his loyalty to Charles I. On the death of 5th Baron in 1777, the peerage remained dormant until allowed in 1799 in favour of William Hamilton of Wishaw. heir gen. of 2nd Baron, as 7th Baron, but again became dor- mant in 1868 on the death of 8th Baron, until adjudged by the House of Lords in 1876 to the 9th Peer. The 2nd and all subsequent Barons descend from Sir John Hamilton of Cadzow. The 8th Baron, who was Lord High Commr. to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, was creat. a Peer of the U.K. as Baron Hamilton of Wishaw, but on his death without issue this title became extinct.
