The 1st peer was Sir John Campbell, who being chief creditor of the 6th Earl of Caithness, obtained from that nobleman his whole estate and earldom, and on his death was creat. by patent Earl of Caithness, but shortly afterwards the earldom was decided by Parliament to belong to George Sinclair, of Kief, when Sir John Camp- bell obtained a new patent creating him Earl of Breadalbane and Holland, etc., with remainder to whichever of his sons by his 1st wife he chose to appoint in writing ; his 2nd s. sue. him under this patent, and that line becoming extinct, the title was, on the death of the 5th Earl in 1862, claimed by the representative of the elder son's line.
