Bishop of Bristol 1914., On the translation of the 43rd Bishop of Bristol to Ely in 1836, the See of Bristol was united to Glou- cester, but was re-constituted as a separate See in 1897. The present diocese includes the nine dean- eries of Bristol, Bittou, Stapelton, Malmesbury, Chippenham, and Crieklade. The endowment was provided by an annual sum of £700 from the endowments of the See of Gloucester, and by a sum of £60,000 which was raised by public sub- scription. A sum of £5,000 was also raised for the alteration of a house presented to the See, but a new house has been built at a cost of £14,000 on a site given for the purpose.
