Among the remote ancestors of this family is the famous necromancer Hugo de Gif- ford [temp. 1200) who according to tradition in- vested the famous Colstoun Pear, which is still preserved at Colstoun, with the power of securing unfailing prosperity for its possessor. This passed into the Broun family through a dau. of Lord Yester who married a Broun in the sixteenth century. The 2nd Bt. was drowned with his wife and family, when the pear and estates parsed away to another branch of the family and became separated from the baronetcy. The story goes that his wife had attempted to eat the pear, which is said to still show marks of teeth, though accord- ing to another version she had only dreamt of eating the pear on the night of her marriage.
