This family traces its de- scent tlirough a long line of distinguished chieftains and powerful nobles, from Sir Richard le Scot of the reign of Alexander III of Scotland, who, as a feudal lord, swore fealty to Edw. I, anno 1296 : among their ancestry is Sir Walter Scott, of Branxholme and Buccleuch, on whose deeds the " Lay of the Last Minstrel " is founded. But in the male line the duke represents James, Duke of Monmouth (the illegitimate son of Charles II by Lucy Walters), who, marrying Anne, Countess and Duchess of Buccleuch in her own right, be- came the paternal ancestor of the present peer.
