This family is descended from William Conyngham, who was grandson of the Earl of Glencairn and Bishop of Argyll 1539. Sir Albert Conyngham obtained an Earldom, and other titles, together with a Barony, granted in remamder to his nephew, F. P. Burton, of Buncraggy, from whom the pres. Peer is descended ; the name of Con- yngham was assumed on succeedmg to the title and estates of that family, while a new earldom and marquisate were successively conferred upon the descendants of Mr. Burton. The 2nd Marq. was a Glen, in the Army ; Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs ; a Loi-d of the Treasury, Post- master-General, and for some years M.P. for Donegal.
