The 1st Peer was elder bro. of Sir John Ramsay, who, having rescued James VI from the attempt made upon liis life by the Earl of Gowrie and Alexander Ruthven, was created Lord Ramsay, and Vi-'c. Haddington, honours which expired with him. The 9th Earl was a military commander, dis- tinguished during the Peninsula war, particularly at Waterloo. His next bro. assumed the name of Maule in lieu of his patronymic Ramsay, on inheriting through his grandmotlier the estates of the extinct Earls of Panmure, and was father of the 11th Earl, at whose death, the Scottish honours reverted to the descendants of the 8th earl, who continued to bear the name of Ramsay. The 10th Earl was created a Marquis, which title became extinct at his death ; he was Governor- General of India from 1847 to 1856, and emin- ently distinguished himself in that capacity. The 11th Earl (as the Right Hon. Fox Maule, and 2nd Baron Panmure, which title became extinct on his death) held the offices successively of Vice- President of the Board of Trade, Secretary at War, and President of the Board of Control ; he was also keeper of the privy seal of Scotland for 21 years, and M.P. for Perthshire, Elgin, and for Perth during 17 years.
