The 1st Peer was Lord-Lieut, of Ireland, and summoned a parliament there in 1432. The Stanleys are of ancient Saxon descent. Soon after the Conquest, Joan Stanley, the only dau. and heir of this family, m. William De- Aldithley ; he assrmied the name of his wife, and v/as progenitor of the Earls of Derby ; who, therefore, in the male line, derive from the same stock as the Audleys, viz. from Adam De Aldith- ley. a companion of William the Conqueror. The I4th Earl was an eminent statesman and prime minister ; he sat in the House of Peers for several years as Lord Stanley, having been summoned in liis father's barony of Stanley of Bickerstaffe ; he had previously been M.P. successively for Stockbriclge, Preston, Windsor, and Lancashire, luilchng his seat from 1822-44, and filled succes- sively the offices of Chief Sec. for Ireland, Sec. of State for the Colonies, and First Lord of the Treasury. The 15th Earl was twice Sec. of State for Foreign Affairs, and also Sec. of State for the C'olonies and India.
