The 1st Peer in this family was Humble Ward, who, having m. the Baroness Dudley (granddau. and heir of Edward Sutton, Lord Dvidley, whose title was creat. by writ in 1342), was raised to the peerage as Baron Ward ; his s. inherited the two titles and becanne Baron Dudley and Ward ; on the death of the 5th Baron Ward, the Barony of Dudley passed to the s. of his sister Frances ; the 6th Baron was advanced to the dignity of a Vise, in 1763, and the 4th Vise, obtained an Earldom ; on the death of the latter, however, without Lssue, all the titles became extinct, except the Barony of Ward, which passed to the pres. Peer's grand- father as great-grandson of the 1st Baron's 2nd s.
