This is a branch of the dvical house of Norfolk, springing from Lord William Howard, eld. s. of 2nd Duke, by his 2nd wife ; he received the title of Baron Howard of Effingham for diplomatic services, and was Lord Privj' Seal in the reign of Elizabetli. The 2nd Baron was Great. Earl of Nottingham for his exertions against the Spanish Armada ; the dignity ex- pired, however, in his 2nd s., while the Barony reverted to a junior branch of the family. The 7th Baron was creat. Earl of Effimgham for his mihtary services, but tliis title also became ex- tinguished in 1816 on the death of the 4th Earl. The pres. Peer's great-grandfather, a distin- guished General, next sue. to the ancient Barony ; and on him the Earldom was eventually con- ferred anew.
