The 1st Baron Le Despencer was one of the mosfc powerful Barons of his time, and fell at the battle of Evesham. The Barony of Le Despencer, being creat. by summons, descended, upon the death of 22nd Baron, upon the mother of the present Peer as heir female of the eld. s., while the Baronetcy passed to the 2nd s. (see Stapleion, Bt. ). The 1st Vise, was warden of the stannaries, comp- troller of the Household, and a. privy counsellor in 1714 ; his 2nd s. was the celebrated Admiral Boscawen who received the thanks of Parliament for his services in North America. The 4th Vise, was created Earl in 1821, but that title became extinct at the death of his s., while the minor honours reverted to the father of the present Peer.
