This family is descended from the ancient house of Grant of Grant, now represented by the Earl of Seafield, and diverged from the main stem in 1580. The 1st Bt. was one of the senators of the college of justice, and bore the title of Lord CuUen, derived from an estate in Banffshire. He was created a Bt. by Queen Anne for his services in promoting the Union. The 2nd Bt. commanded the Grant clan at the battle of CuUo- den in 1745, and was for many years M.P. for Aberdeenshire.
