This family derives from Sir John Grey, of Berwick, living in the year 1372, whose eldest grandson was Earl of Tankerville, in Normandy, and whose youngest grandson was Bishop of London in 1426 : froni the second grandson this branch of the fainily is descended. The 1st Peer was Sir William, creat. Baron Grey of Werke in 1623 ; his title became extinct, but the representation of the family was carried on by Sir WiUiam's tuicle, whose descendant, Henry Grey of Howick, was creat. a Bt. in 1746 ; the Bt.'s s. having distinguished himself as a naval commander, eventually obtained an earl- dom ; the 2nd Earl was Prime Minister from 1830-4. The 3rd Earl sat in the House of Com- mons for nearly twenty and in the House of Lords for nearly fifty years ; was for sixty years memb. of the Privy Council, and filled many offices of State.
