The first Peer was a field-marshal in the Army, who, after having distinguished himself throughout the whole of the Peninsular war, im- mediately held many political offices, became Governor- General of India, serv. as second in command at the battles on the Sutlej, and eventually held the office of commander-in-chief from 1852-6, including the whole of the Russian war ; among many personal honours and rewards, he was granted a pension of £3,000 from Parliament for the lives of the next two successors in the peerage.
