The 1st Baron Howard De Walden was s. of the 4th Duke of Norfolk ; he was also created Earl of Suffolk, and was mainly instrumental in discovering the gunpowder plot ; on the death of the 3rd Earl of Suffolk, without male issue, the earldom reverted to that Peer's bro., ancestor of the present Earl of Suffolk, while the Barony, being created by summons, passed in the female line, and consequently the representative of his eldest dau. sue. as 4th Lord Howard De Walden ; the latter was creat. Baron Braybrooke with a special renrainder ; dying, however, without issue male, the De Walden title reverted to the representative of the 3rd Earl of Suffolk's younger dau., and he was the ancestor of the present Peer, whose claim to the title was admitted on petition to the Crown in 1806, The Ellis family, paternal ancestors of this house, were long settled in the island of Jamaica. The 6th Baron was successively Under-Sec of State for Foreign Affairs, and envoy extraordinary at Stockholm, Lisbon, and Brussels.
