Tliis family, which has descents from the early kings of Scotland, the Saxon kings of England, and the dukes of Normandy, is the chief existing representative of the house of Barra, of Aberdeenshire. The earliest of the name ipon iccord in Aberdeenshire is Robertus dictus King, who d. ante 1247. The present Bt.'s immediate ancestor .settled in Fermanagh fe7np. Charles I, and Dr. William King, Arch- bishop of Dubhn 1703-29, the distinguished divine and statesman, was a memb. of the same family. Sir James King, a cadet of the house of Barra, who served under Gustavus Adolphus, and was a It. -gen. to Charles I, was creat. Baron Eythin (Scotland) 1642, and Baron Sanshult (Sweden), but these titles became extinct on his death.
