Lorton. This last-named Peer, who was his 2nd s., received his title for military services, and was an Irish repre- sentative Peer for 34 years. The 3rd Earl of Kingston received in 1821 an English Barony, which, however, became extinct on the failure of his direct line in 1809, while the Irish honours devolved on his kinsman, the 2ud Vise. This title was for- merly held by the Bruces, Earls of Elgin and Ailesbury, but on the death of Charles, 4th Earl of Elgin and 3rd Earl of Ailesbury, in 1847. the Barony descended through his dau. the Duchess of Chandos, and her granddau., who m. Richard, Duke of Buckingham, to the father of the pres. peeress, who established his right to be 7th Baron Kinloss, and upon whose death in 1889, without issue male, the dukedom became extinct.
