The an- cestor of this family was Sir AVilliam Keith, who in 1458 was created Earl M.irischal of Scotland ; the 10th Earl Marischal was attainted in 1715, and the honours were forfeited, A younger s. of 6th Earl Marischal had been created Earl of Kintore, and from him the present Earl is de- scended. The 1st Earl of Kintore received an extension of his patent to his own heirs female, and to the lieirs male of his bro. George ; he -was appointed hereditary Knight Marischal of Scotland for his exertions in preventing the regalia of Scot- land from falling into the hands of Cromwell. In 1761, the peerage having devolved upon the attainted Earl Marischal, became suspended until his death in 1778, when it passed, according to the limitation in the patent of creation, through an heir female to the 8th Lord Falconer of Halkerton, of whom the present peer is a descendant.
