The 4th Baron (who was creat. 1st Earl of Melville) was a distin- guished minister, temp. William III ; his wife sue. her niece in the earldom of Leven, which thenceforth accompanied the Melville title. The family re-assumed the name of Melville in addition to that of Leslie in 1805, in con- formity with their paternal descent. The 1st Earl of Leven was an eminent republican general. The 9th Earl of Leven (who was the 11th holder of that title) and Melville was for 10 years a representative Peer for Scotland. The nth Earl was a representative Peer for Scotland from 1892 to the date of his death.
