Sir John Lowther, JM.P. for Westmorland, was created a baronet in 1640. His grandson, the 1st Peer in this family, was First Lord of the Treasury in 1690, and received a Barony and Viscoiuitj' in 1696, which became extinct in 1750. These titles, together wdth the Earldom of Lonsdale, were renewed in 1784 in favour of the representative of the extinct viscounts, but this Peer also cUed without issue, and the Earldom became extinct ; the minor honovirs had, however, been re-granted to him in 1797, with a special remainder to the pres. Peer's great-grandfather, who obtained a revival of the Earldom also. The 2nd Earl was sumiuoned to the House of Peers during his father's lifetime, and sat for some years as Lord Lowther ; he held successively the offices of a Lord of the Admiralty, a Lorcl of the Treasury, First Commissioner of Woods and Forests, Vice- President of the Board of Trade, Postmaster-
