The paternal ancestor of the present peer, however, was Sir Francis Scott, Bt., of Thirlestane, who assumed the name of Napier, and inherited the peerage in the female line. Among his distinguished relatives were the late Lieut. -General Sir Charles James Napier, of Indian celebrity, and the no less celebrated General Sir William Napier, author of " The History of the Peninsular War," etc., as well as the late Admiral Sir Charles Napier.
