The 1st Earl of Beverley, great-grandfather of the present Duke, was 2nd s. of Sir Hugh Smithson, Duke of Northumberland, who was creat. Baron Lovaine with remainder for his 2nd s. The 11th Earl of Northumberland d. without male issue in 1670 ; his dau. and sole heir (who svic. to the baronial honours only) m. 6th Duke of Somerset, and their son, the 7th Duke of Somerset, having been summoned to Parliament as Baron Percy, was created Earl of Northumberland, with re- mainder (having no male issue) to his son-in-law, Sir Hugh Smithson, Bt. ; the latter sue. to the earldom in 1750, on the death of his father-in-law, and having assumed the name of Percy, he was created Duke of Northumberland ; the pres. Peer is Sir Hugh Smithson's great-great-grandson through his 2nd s., and thus descends, by female line, from the ancient house of Percy. The Duke of Northumberland, of Charles II's time, was that King's 3rd natural s. by the Duchess of Cleveland, and was created Duke of Northumber- land four years after the death of Joceline Percy, 11th Earl ; hishonotu's expired, however, in 1716, and the Percy line was revived. The 5th Duke was Earl of Beverley for 35 years before his suc- cession to the dukedom in 1865.
